Sycophancy in AI Isn't a Personality Flaw — It's a Systemic Risk
Here is an insightful article by Emma Matthies on LinkedIn regarding AI Sycophancy.

🌟 I. Introduction: The Age of Algorithmic Affirmation

We’ve grown accustomed to digital validation. Every tap, swipe, and interaction with technology, especially AI chatbots, is designed to leave us feeling understood, affirmed, and validated. But as AI systems become relentlessly positive—affirming rather than challenging, encouraging rather than critically engaging, we face a subtler and more insidious problem: our minds and worldviews begin to shift.

In this issue of Code Uncovered, we explore the hidden psychological, cultural, and communicational impacts of AI’s affirmation bias. It's time to unpack what happens when positivity becomes a default setting rather than a genuine response, and to reconsider what kind of relationship we truly want with our technology.

🤖 II. Why Bots Became Our Cheerleaders

Tech companies discovered early on that user experience (UX) isn't just about seamless interfaces—it's deeply rooted in emotional resonance. Positive affirmations from AI bots tap into fundamental human psychology: we naturally gravitate towards interactions that feel supportive and validating. Consequently, an affirmational approach was adopted as a strategic tool to foster loyalty, lengthen engagement, and encourage repeated use.

Yet, beneath this user-centric façade lies a clear business imperative. By consistently affirming users' viewpoints, choices, and preferences, AI platforms maximise user retention, extending time spent within apps and digital services.

Longer interaction times directly translate into increased data capture, enhanced ad revenue, and more substantial customer lifetime value—all reinforcing profitability. Thus, affirmation becomes more than just kindness; it’s a calculated, commercially driven method to secure sustained user attention in a competitive digital landscape.

Yet, these seemingly innocuous reasons carry consequences far beyond mere business strategy. This business-oriented decision fundamentally impacts human psyche, perception, and communication, which may not align with the future we desire.
